In its endeavor to provide high-quality, low-cost, self-sustaining permanent eye care infrastructure in underserved areas of the country, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) inaugurated its 14th rural (secondary) eye centre in Rayagada, Odisha – the Nariandas & Morbai Budhrani Eye Centre on 31st August. An integral part of the eye centre in Rayagada is the JK Center for Tribal Eye Health. The Centre was inaugurated by Shri Naveen Patnaik – Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha. Also present on the occasion were, Mr Devidas N Budhrani, Founder Trustee of Naraiandas Morbai Budhrani Trust; Mr H P Singhania, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of JKPL; Shri Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak – Hon’ble Minister, Health & Family Welfare and Information & Public Relations, Government of Odisha; Shri N Bhaskar Rao – Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, State Planning Board, Government of Odisha; Shri Lalbihari Himirika – Hon’ble Minister, ST & SC Development, Minorities & Backward Classes Welfare Department, Government of Odisha; Elizabeth Kurian, CEO, Mission for Vision; Gullapalli N Rao, Chair LVPEI; and Dr Taraprasad Das, Vice-Chair, LVPEI.

About LVPEI

Established in 1987, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) is a comprehensive eye health facility with its main campus located in Hyderabad, India. A World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness, the Institute offers comprehensive patient care, sight enhancement and rehabilitation services and high-impact rural eye health programs. It also pursues cutting edge research and offers training in human resources for all levels of ophthalmic personnel.

LVPEI is the first major eye institute in India to receive accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers (NABH). The Institute’s Kallam Anji Reddy campus in Hyderabad and the Bhubaneswar Campus are NABH accredited.

LVPEI focuses on economically disadvantaged groups in rural and urban geographies and extends its services to them through its network of satellite clinics and rural affiliates. The LVPEI network comprises a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Hyderabad, 3 tertiary centres in Bhubaneswar, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada, 14 secondary and 124 primary care centres that cover the remotest rural areas in the four states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka.

The Institute’s innovative and comprehensive approach to community eye health, the LVPEI Eye Health Pyramid, has been adopted as a model by the Government of India and by other developing countries.
