Horrifying footage shows damage caused by cosmetic eye implants – as doctors warn of ‘severe risk’ of blindness – Mirror Online

The unnamed female patient had travelled to Latin America for the procedure to change her eye colour from brown to bright blue, but complications caused loss of vision and malformed, wonky pupils.

While the procedure is not illegal in the UK, eye surgeons here “strongly recommend” that it’s not carried out on perfectly healthy eyes, a spokeswoman from The Royal College of Ophthalmologists told Mirror Online.

During the experimental surgery, an artificial iris made of silicone is folded and inserted into a slit in the surface of the eyeball. It’s then unfolded to cover up the natural iris.

The American patient in the video in this post had travelled to Panama for the surgery – which is not approved in the USA. A few weeks later, the patient’s eyes were horribly red and inflamed so they went to see Texas-based cataract specialist Stephen Slade.

When he removed the implants, he discovered that the patient’s pupils had been horribly malformed and the tissue of the natural iris had been damaged.

“Anyone who is considering this surgery should ask themselves this: what is more important – my eye colour or my eyesight?” said a spokesman from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
