New optometrist joins Northern Hills Eye Care : Community

Dr. Dave Prosser, Dr. Jason Hafner, Dr. Terry Spencer, and the staff at Northern Hills Eye Care in Sturgis have welcomed Dr. Ross English to the practice.


English is a Black Hills native who said he is excited to return home to provide comprehensive eye care to Sturgis and the Northern Hills community. He is a graduate of Sturgis Brown High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in cell biology and neuroscience from Montana State University. Following his degree from MSU, he pursued his optometry training andreceived his doctorate degree from Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Ore.


English’s optometric education included much diversity in his clinical experiences. He was trained in hospital-based optometry at the Mayo Clinic in Albert Lea, Minn., where he managed cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetes/diabetic eye disease. The site included an emphasis on neuro-optometry.


He did a clinical rotation at the Hot Springs VA Hospital where he had vast experience working with the elderly and the specific problems of the visual system that comes with aging. . English did a clinical rotation at the Norton Sound Health Corp. in Nome, Alaska, where he traveled to remote, under-served villages in the Alaskan Bush. He said the externship gave him the opportunity to practice full-scope optometry to a wide variety of individuals from infants to the elderly. He prescribed glasses and contact lenses, and he treated eye disease and infection, ocular trauma, and did vision therapy.


Finally, English worked in a family practice setting at an optometric clinic in Gillette, Wyo. There he practiced full-scope optometry and said he gained much experience working with local surgeons co-managing cataract and refractive surgery (LASIK) patients.


In their free time, English and his wife, Alyssa, enjoy taking in many of the outdoor activities that the beautiful Black Hills have to offer. English said they love the Northern Hills Community and are looking forward to raising a family here.
