the authors state that the disruption to the supply of vitamins and micronutrients caused by such surgeries could impact the optic nerve and visual system, leading to a range of ophthalmic complications, including night blindness, corneal xerosis, and corneal ulceration.

“Such complications after bariatric surgery are not frequent, but if undetected they can have devastating consequences for patients,” said lead author, Rui Azevedo Guerrio of the Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Central in Lisbon.

Reducing the surface area available to absorb nutrients could have particular significance for vitamins A, E and B1 and copper, which all play a role in maintaining eye health. The authors highlight vitamin A deficiency in particular as key to post-surgical eye complications.
The paper comes just days after the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) issued updated guidance stating that thousands more people in the UK may be suitable for weight loss surgery to avoid complications associated with diabetes, including vision problems.
