HOSPITAL: First anniversary for Parking Eye at Queen’s Hospital | Burton Mail

The automatic number plate recognition scheme was supposed to make parking easier for people visiting the hospital, and bring the site in line with the Disability Discrimination Act, the head of facilities said at the time.

But over the last 12 months, the Parking Eye-operated system seems to have brought little but misery for staff, patients and visitors at the Belvedere Road site.

Dozens of people have been hit with unjustified fines, and even those who have escaped the often-inaccurate gaze of the system have complained it is complicated to use, over-priced and unsuitable for use in a hospital.

The issue has even reached Parliament, with South Derbyshire MP Heather Wheeler speaking out against the methods used by Parking Eye, which installs machinery for free and gathers its profit by issuing fines to motorists who ‘abuse’ the car park.

“They do not get a card that tells them when they came in. They might be rushing to take a child into A and E, or they might be a bit elderly and have eyesight that is not so good.

“This system has been imposed on my constituents, and I’, not happy about it. I can’tt believe the hospital has gone down that route.”
