Poinsett County Democrat Tribune: Local News: Trumann Lions holding annual BBQ Saturday (10/24/14)

The barbecue is one of the Trumann Lions Club’s biggest fundraisers of the year with all proceeds going toward eye glasses, eye surgery, and job training for the blind and visually impaired.

The barbecue began with a blind five-year-old girl who from a low income family who would shop in Teague’s grocery store with family members helping her find items.
One day, Guy Beard, Lions Club president at that time, and John Hurd, the sight chairman, told Teague about a girl they wanted to Lions Club to sponsor for eye surgery. The Lions Club arranged for her to have surgery at Mid-South Methodist Hospital in Memphis. The operation fixed her eyes, and one of her first wishes was to got to Bill Teague’s Market to pick out her own candy for the first time.
After that, Teague started putting together the barbecue. Two years after the girl’s surgery, the Lions Club agreed to hold an annual barbecue as a fundraiser to support the blind and visually handicapped. Teague and his wife, Mary, cooked and prepared the barbecue every year. This year, the barbecue is named in Teague’s honor with Craig Allen taking care of the barbecue.
This year’s barbecue will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at First Baptist Church’s CLC building on Highway 69 west. Tickets are $6 from any Lions member beforehand and $7 at the door.
