1. Emotional Stress

Ongoing, intense stress can cause you to be at risk for Central Serous Retinopathy – which is a 25 cent clinical term eye blisters inside of your eye. Historically, this medical issue has impacted mostly men but we are seeing more cases in women than ever before.

If you notice blisters in your eyes or if you have problems focusing, see your optometrist right away. If you are interested in reducing stress in your life, consider these 10 tips.

2. Depression

A review of the scientific literature reveals a strong link between vision loss and depression. If you have not visited your optometrist in a long time and you are also feeling depressed, the two could be related. This point is particularly true if you have experienced changes in your vision.

3. Anxiety and Social Withdraw

People who experience vision loss and do not pay attention to the warning signs run a higher risk feeling anxious and isolating from others. The research suggests these symptoms are partially caused by not being able to engage in activities that once brought pleasure, coupled with challenges around self-efficacy.

4. Cancer

If you have green eyes, you have one of the rarest eye colors on the planet! It is estimated that only 2% of the world’s population hasgreen eyes. People with lighter colored eyes such as greens and blues are at a higher risk for developing certain types of ocular cancer. This has to do with melanin levels. Wear UV sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

If you see a growing dark spot on your iris or other symptoms such as flashing lights or blurred vision, contact your doctor immediately.

5. Blepharospasm

This particular medical issue is insidious in nature because the symptoms are subtle. Blepharospasm is an involuntary blinking of the eyes or spasm of the eyelids. If you notice that you are involuntarily blinking your eyes or have eye irritation, this could be the culprit. Other symptoms of blepharospasm can include emotional tension and fatigue. Visit your eye doctor if you are aware of these symptoms.

6. Computer Vision Syndrome

Do you sometimes find it hard to focus? Do you get headaches? Do your eyes dry out? These could be a sign of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). This particular medical issue happens to people after spending long periods of time in front of a computer. Learn more about the symptoms from the American Optometric Association.

7. Diabetes

If you have leaky blood vessels in your eyes it could indicate that you have diabetes or are pre-diabetic. Diabetes is known to damage and even destroy vision if left unchecked. Regular visits to your optometrist can help catch diabetes before it becomes a problem.

8. High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is often referred to as hypertension – which is also known as a “silent killer”. If you notice small changes in the retina’s blood vessels, such as ballooning or narrowing, see your doctor. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association linked changes in the retina to elevated risk for heart disease.
