Braille Reading

I love Braille reading . Since childhood when I started learning Braille, I consider it my life. If today I am somewhere in my studies, I am because of Braille. What I feel is that, with Braille I can study any time in the day. Because I feel it is better than listening to the audio. Maybe that is my view point, as all people may find comfort with audio as well. More over the joy in reading something is different than listening. Because when u read something by yourself, you understand it better. But yes, like everything has two sides, Braille also has its negative points. When we take notes in class, sometimes we are not able to match the speed of what the person is telling. As a result, sometimes the main points are left out. Now I can say that once you get adjusted to reading Braille, you cannot adjust well with other means of learning things! – Kriti Banga

Braille is indeed an important means of written communication, adding to what this amazing person said: Over and above the joy which Braille reading can give, it is indeed important as an effective tool for following reasons:

  1. Braille helps you in understanding word formation which you can’t be good at if you rely purely on audios especially those which are recorded, because you need to put that extra effort to check the spellings by using tools like dictionary.
  2. Braille in a sense enhances your sense of understanding things by touch, which helps any blind identify textures of cloths, quicker identification of objects, currencies, and many other things.
  3. The reading speed with which it is easy to read Braille and speak in public with due importance to punctuation either as a presentation or live information which is frequently refreshing such as news feed, is not so easy to handle with softwares like screen readers.
  4. Braille also helps one in understanding the format of things like letters, applications, which is generally not taken care if you just rely on softwares.
  5. Refreshable Braille Displays, softwares to type on computer in Braille script for those who don’t know computers initially, and other such devices are making Braille useful even in today’s technological age. Lot of innovation needs to happen and cost factor of such devices need to be brought down in order for Braille to survive as an important tool in the digital age.
